Whenever someone elseâs âtruthâ is presented in a given novel it is introduced without fail into the dialogic field of vision of the other major heroes of the novel. Ivan Karamazov, for example, knows and understands Zosimaâs truth as well as Dmitriâs truth and Alyoshaâs truth and the âtruthâ of that old sensualist, his father Fyodor Pavlovich. Dmitri understands all these truths as well; Alyosha, too, understands them perfectly. In The Possessed there is not a single idea that fails to find a dialogic response in Stavroginâs consciousness.
